Milfoil weevils  could be more helpful to local habitats and humans than anyone realizes. This little bug could be  very helpful because it eats the invasive flora known as milfoil and poses no threat to  mankind.
 
In the United States., there are  two sorts of milfoil. One is indigenous and the other  invasive (Eurasian Milfoil). The indigenous species is not a trouble but the Eurasian one is a major environmental menace. Eurasian Milfoil is the reason the milfoil weevil is so significant.  
 
Eurasian milfoil  (from this point forward all milfoil will be believed Eurasian  milfoil unless otherwise noted) was most in all probability introduced to the United States sometime between the late 1800’s to 1940’s as either a stowaway on a Ships ballast or discarded  shipping material. Milfoil can easily travel on the undersurface of a boat and  grow quickly, which causes terrible ecological changes and causes problems for people.   Luckily this can spread the milfoil weevil as well.
 
  Milfoil spreads quickly, which results in less growth for indigenous floras, less food for  some creatures and less living habitat for small marine creatures.   Milfoil mats decrease the oxygen in the water, which  can endanger fish and cause unhealthy algae growth.
 
The milfoil is more irritating for people than harmful because it can lose weight  the amount of water available for yachting, angling, bathing and waterskiing.   Residential Districts are more adversely affected  as the mats can foul intake and overflow pipes ensuing in flooding or droughts.   The mats can be particularly destructive to dykes by breaking or clogging generators and  reducing power yield.  
 
The milfoil weevil could  well be the answer to this plant epidemic.   The milfoil weevil prefers Eurasian milfoil to the indigenous variety, which  means that the invasive species are killed over time and indigenous floras are allowed to  gradually recover. Coupled with a high breeding rate, the  weevil is the safe and ideal solution to the milfoil problem. When looking at how the milfoil propagates it becomes clear and why milfoil weevils control it so well.  
 
Milfoil spread when a small section is broken off, sinks to the bottom and then takes  root, forming a new growth. Using large marine harvesters are not  the solution as the break up the milfoil too much and it grows right back. Vacuum dredging works a small better because no broken bits are left behind, but at  the same time the vacuum disrupts the water and could leave no plant life at the bottom.
 
  With a taste for Eurasia milfoil rather than the native milfoil, the weevil eats the plant  from the inside out, finally destroying the whole flora. With only 30 days  to live, the milfoil weevils will go through three generations before coming ashore for  the winter. Milfoil weevils  do have wings, but no one has ever seen them fly so no on knows exactly how the come ashore for the wintertime.  Irrespective, once there they survive even the harshest Minnesota  winters.
