State budget cuts are not only affecting jobs, but also services to citizens, including children with hearing loss. Many families cannot afford to pay for the hearing aids their children need to function. The family of one eighteen month old is one of them. Eighteen month old Ashton Benberg has hearing loss and needs hearing aids.

The families audiologist temporarily loaned the young man a hearing aid. Family members said it instantly changed his world. “Instantly his face lit up.”

But the Benbergs say they cannot afford the $4,000 bill for hearing aid equipment. Until recent budget cuts, a $190,000 state funded program helped families like the Benbergs in need.

Department of Human Rights administrator Kathryn Reece said 3,000 children from grades K-12 are hard of hearing and need some type of hearing assistance like a hearing aid. The Child and Family Policy Center is pushing to have hearing aids covered by insurance.

Some 14 states have forced insurance companies to cover audiological services. Bills have been introduced in local legislatures to do the same, but many go unpassed. Until hearing aids are considered essential and can be covered by insurance companies nation wide, many children like Ashton and his parents may be forced to do without a life changing device.

Meantime, Ashton is learning sign language, but his mother said the cost of a hearing aid is minimal to what it will cost in the future if these children cannot acquire language skills.

Just recently I was trawling through my own personal myspace page, which incidentally I don’t use that often. I noticed that I had a few new friend requests. On inspection there where the few obvious spammers and a few actual people, but, there was one particular bands music profile which stuck out! That band where called The Vouch. I thought at first, what a cool name, so I accepted the add. Apparantly they are the best band in the world? The Vouch… A few weeks passed and I began using myspace page a little more, to stay in touch with friends. I then began noticing I was getting harassed with messages, constant bulletins and quite frankly it was bothering me. I made the decision that I was going to block them from my friends list.

So I proceeded to click on there profile for the first time, a moment I wont, forget may I add. A huge sound passed through my small pc speakers and monitor. A soft broken melodic voice and piercing lead guitar followed. With nothing short of breath taking drumming! I couldn’t believe I had ignored this for so long! I was robbing myself of a brilliant experience! The tracks on the page where comparative to those of a certain Mr Lennon and McCartney and a Mr Davies.

Very raw very British and very catchy. Now I must say that I have removed myself from the current music scene, as quite frankly it is tripe! I spend my time listening to the Beatles, the Kinks, the Stones and any bands which have really stood the test of time! So I was quite taken a back by the ability of a small town unsigned band! So I did a little more digging, compared them to other local unsigned acts, nothing came close! This is why I urge you to listen to The Vouch. They are a 5 piece from extremely humble beginnings. Its a former mining town, and with no intention of offending people there, it has become a breeding ground for zombies born and breed to work underground. There music is often dreamy mixing facts with fiction to create a real experience, when listening! After really getting into the bands recordings I decided to make the journey to one of there live shows. They appear regularly at the Rock Cafe Cannock but this was not really a venue I wanted to visit. So on closer inspection of their gig guide I found a gig at the dirty south club London, the band had arranged coach travel. So I decided to get in touch and get down there. They where due to support a dj set from former oasis guitarist ‘Bonehead’, so I thought it would be a good night. The Day Of The Gig The coach arrived at 4 o’clock on a Saturday to pick us up from the dreaded ‘Cannock bus station’. I hoped on to find it full of drunken teenagers and thought what am I doing. I sat at the front alone for around an hour, before a chubby young lad introduced himself to me. He walked to the front of the coach, carling cans in hand one of which he passed to me, and said “Ort, I’m Beaver.” The trip on the coach took around 4 hours and was extremely wild, not for the faint hearted.

I felt really sorry for the coach driver!  I wanted to see if they really were the best band in the world, i think they certainly were the best band in cannock! We arrived in London at around 8.30pm local time and went into the venue. I was very surprised to see the band just instantly mingle with there friends and fans and drinks where exchanged immediately. Time slid by as I spent most of the time with my new acquaintances ,’Beaver’ , watching the other support acts. Several pints of Guiness later and toilet breaks, the band arrived on stage. With the front man and bass player tuning in to the dirty pretty things anthem ‘Bang Bang You’re Dead’. They immediately threw there instruments to the floor and jumped into the growing crowd to dance and……. well……… go metal really. Was this a ploy to create mayhem I’m unsure, but it did work! They took to the stage in a venue, that you wouldn’t imagine would have much of an atmosphere……. but they seemed to create there own. Track after track of exhilarating music, the crowd loving it, with some minor stage invasions. All in all I sum up that The Vouch are a must see! Josh Smithyman

The Bassett Lowke company dedicates itself in creating scale models such as model trains and railways.  Besides trains, they also bring in line-ups of model ships, boats, tractors, excavators, and model construction vehicles. 

As a son of a boiler-maker, W.J. Bassett Lowke only had a few years spent in proper education but had spent a considerable amount of time in an architect’s office.  In the long run, he joined his father in his business making boilers.  While making boilers, the young Bassett-Lowke used some of his free time making model steam engines which are only for display.  At the time he started his own company, he created a mail order catalogue business together with an associate who used to be a bookkeeper in his father’s boiler-making business.

Bassett-Lowke’s interest in making model trains was sharpened when he attended the Paris Exhibition in 1900 where he also bought elaborate German-made model trains with English livery paint.  The earliest scale model factory he built was at the town of Nothampton.  Initially, the first scale models his company manufactured were scale model ships used as training pieces for the navy and for display.  Afterwards, scale model trains followed but were only available to the wealthy.  Bassett-Lowke also coordinated with E.W. Twining for the production of architectural models for model railways.

In 1905, their 15 inch gauge steam locomotive called “Little Giant” performed a test run.  This trial run functioned as a preview for people on how the model train’s main line counterpart would run once it start service.
The Bassett-Lowke company continue their usual style of producing model trains in terms of materials and fine points, but they continually add new technological ways in improving the functionality of each model train and railway piece.  Innovative ways of working model trains and railways have given regulars and hobbyists alike the esteem and enjoyment they deserve.

At present, a number of legendary main line locomotives are offered by the Bassett-Lowke line up.  Among them are the Flying Scotsman and the Flying Fox.  These two iconic steam locomotives are the brainchildren of England’s well-known Chief Mechanical Engineer Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley.

Created in 1923, The Flying Scotsman was recorded to be the fastest steam locomotive of its time.  The Flying Scotsman ended its service in 1963 and the Flying Fox in 1964.

The Bassett-Lowke Flying Scotsman and Flying Fox are made from soldered sheet metal, a distinct feature the company has been doing since they started.  The in-house workings also contain revised gearboxes which makes the model trains run quieter, smoke generators to simulate the steam exhaust from the engine, electric drive, illuminated firebox, and superb paintwork and miniature details to say the least.

Charlene and I are working real hard to work matters better in each of our worlds. After my 3rd spousal relationship finished, , and let us only say it is over, please, I just knew it had become time to realize a shift. And not just some shift, I’m talkin’ a heavy change, sweetheart.

I don’t mean to seem querulous. I’ll get it all together. I only wish individuals would sometimes focus on what I have done instead of what I still need to complete. I do understand it is not easy being you, but it is not simple being me, either. We all got to work hard to be happy, I think.
