Why Do I Have Morning Sickness?

“Morning sickness”, as nearly any pregnant woman will tell you, is a misleading term; while it is true that the morning is the most intense time for nausea symptoms, they can strike at any time during the day.75% of women are affected by nausea and vomiting symptoms, usually beginning about week six and continuing through week 14 to 18; there are a few women, however, who continue experiencing symptoms throughout their pregnancies.Whether they last a few weeks or a few months, the symptoms of morning sickness are a force to be reckoned with, and should not be dismissed.

Although the reasons for nausea and/or vomiting during pregnancy are not 100% clear, it seems that a combination of causes – hormonal, physical, psychological – are responsible.This includes, of course, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) – also known as the pregnancy hormone, nausea levels tend to match levels of hCG; in addition, increased estrogen can affect your system and especially explain the sensitivity to aromas that is common to pregnant women.

Also, research suggests that some women are simply naturally more prone to experiencing nausea or vomiting as a response to stress, and that it is almost “normal” for their bodies to respond to the stress of pregnancy in that way.There are many strategies you can use to try to get nausea relief; though they are not backed by hard science, they are practices which have been used by generations of women and do not involve medication.

It is important to try to eat frequently during the day, so your stomach doesn’t ever get totally empty; for the same reason, you can put a little box of crackers by your bed to have when you wake up. Stay in bed for another half hour or so to let your stomach settle and then try to get up – you may find your nausea is relieved this way. It is also a smart idea just to take your time getting up in general, instead of jumping right out of bed.

Foods that are rich (fatty or fried), or spicy or acidic are often nausea and vomiting triggers; however, some studies show relief with high-protein foods (though women tend to crave high-carbohydrate ones) – so experiment.Do not force yourself to eat or be around foods that cause nausea, even if that means having a rather limited diet.Besides choosing bland foods, you’ll want to try to eat foods at room temperature or cold, since hot foods have stronger aromas and can cause nausea.

You must drink plenty of fluids, for good health and to counteract vomiting – but be sure not to have too many liquids at meals, as you’ll likely be too full; good beverage choices include ginger tea or ginger ale (real ginger works against nausea), sports drinks, and cold, carbonated beverages.

You can also take steps like avoiding nausea triggers unrelated to food, like strong smells or motion (such as a car ride); you can also try using acupressure bands or even hypnosis for nausea relief.Morning sickness may be common, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a huge, stressful obstacle; this means that even if you’ve tried every natural remedy and they don’t work, you can and should still discuss medication options with your doctor.
